Flights to Japan, minus the guesswork.
The flight is the biggest line on the trip budget and the one people wing. Here’s the short version.
When to book
For US departures, the sweet spot is roughly 2–5 months out. Inside 3–4 weeks, prices climb fast. Cherry blossom (late March–mid April), Golden Week (early May), Obon (mid August), and New Year sell out early — book those 5–8 months ahead. Cheapest windows: January after New Year, February, early June, September.
Which airport
Tokyo has two. Haneda sits about 30 minutes from the city; Narita is roughly twice that but often has the cheaper fares and the budget carriers. For Osaka and Kyoto, it’s Kansai (KIX). Covering both ends of the country? Fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka, or the reverse — one-way Shinkansen instead of backtracking.
The budget carrier worth knowing
ZIPAIR is JAL’s low-cost arm out of Narita — West Coast cities and Honolulu, with the route map still growing. Fares are bare: the seat is cheap, bags and meals cost extra. Price the total before celebrating.
Track, don’t guess
Set a Google Flights price alert on your route and watch it for two or three weeks. Japan fares swing by hundreds of dollars. Book the dip, not the deadline.
Where to book
When the airline’s own site matches the price, book direct — changes and delays are easier to handle. When a booking site is meaningfully cheaper (it happens on Japan routes), take the savings.
